Shane Lewis Awarded Dick Moroso Memorial Award

Friday, March 21, 2014

The Palm Beach County Sports Hall of Fame was created to recognize and honor the outstanding achievements and contributions of local athletes, coaches, administrators, media, and others in the field of sports. Each year in early spring, the inductees are honored at a gala banquet.

On March 23, Shane Lewis will be presented with the 2014 Dick Moroso Memorial Award honoring him for his contributions to motorsports in Palm Beach County, keeping the memory of Dick Moroso and his passion for sportsmanship and competition alive. This award covers all aspects of racing, from drivers to sponsors, and highlights the economic and social impact of motorsports to the county, as well as bringing awareness to the Sports Hall of Fame, and paving the way for future Hall of Fame inductees from the motorsports community. Shane Lewis is the Resident Professional Driver at Palm Beach International Raceway for the Palm Beach Driving Club.

Shane Lewis started racing in 1989 and is widely considered one of motorsports’ leading race and development drivers. His impressive resume includes race victories in championships throughout the world including the American Le Mans Series, the European Le Mans Series, the Rolex Sports Car Series, SCCA World Challenge, Continental Challenge, VLN and the World 24hr Series. In 2013, Shane claimed victories in the prestigious Rolex 24 at Daytona and the Dunlop 24H Dubai.

A resident of Jupiter, FL., Shane has competed in an impressive 37 twenty-four hour races including three 24 Hours of Le Mans, seventeen 24 Hours of Daytona, four 24 Hours of Nürburgring and three 24 Hours of Dubai. He has raced in eight 12 Hours of Sebring, seven Petit Le Mans, won two 6 hours of Nürburgring (German). Shane has won the 24 hours of Daytona, the 24 hours of Nurburgring, the 24 hours of Dubai and the 12 hours of Magy Cours, France.

When not competing, Shane is one of the most sought-after set-up and personal racecar driving coaches in the business. He has successfully raced every major class of sports cars, in every major international series. His skills are often in demand for everything from a NASCAR Sprint Cup stock car, to open wheel cars and Prototypes, to even the Pikes Peak Hill Climb. He is a past recipient of the Professional Sports Car Racing’s Rising Star Award, IMSA Driver of the Year, and is a proud inductee into the Road Racing Drivers Club.

Shane Lewis teaches performance driving to Palm Beach Driving Club Members as the official Resident Club Pro at Palm Beach International Raceway (formerly Moroso Motorsports Park), his home track. He works with private clients and aspiring race car drivers of all ages on how to get the most out of their high performance road cars and race cars. He can also be seen performing precision driving in television, video, and movie productions.

Using the attention of his racing success, Shane has enthusiastically supported charities from around the world. But his passion is giving back to his local community. From 4 legs to 2, Shane supports Palm Beach County’s very own, in organizations from the Big Dog Ranch Rescue to the Boys and Girls Club. His current efforts are raising awareness and support for the Place of Hope, a family- style outreach for children’s foster care. He has been married to his wife Crystal for 20 years and helps Shane stay in shape as she is the fitness director for Lob Lolly Country Club and a triathlon competitor.

The Sports Hall of Fame banquet will be held at the Palm Beach County Convention Center Sunday, March 23, starting at 5:00 pm. Tickets may be purchased individually and are also available for full-table purchases.
