Palm Beach International Raceway hosted the Championship Cup Series (CCS) Unlimited Gran Prix motorcycle races on Sunday, Aug. 22. The series had approximately 200 racers participating in this multi-race event. The majority of the riders hail from Florida and South America.
Sean Dwyer, of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., won the first race - - Expert GTO - - on the final lap of the nine lap race by 0.4 seconds with an average lap speed of 103.86 mph riding a Suzuki GSXR 1000 Superbike.
“The first race, the GTO, was pretty good,” stated the 32-year-old racer. “I got off to a bad start and I was being held up a little bit. Santiago [Villa] had a couple second lead and I thought I could run up to him real quick. He was trying really hard to keep me away from his draft. He stayed out front for a long time. I just chipped away at it - - just a couple tenths [of a second] a lap. The corner on the last lap was good. He [Villa] put in a really good race”.
Dwyer, who has been racing motorcycles for at least five years, really likes racing at Palm Beach International Raceway.
“This track is good. It has a really good surface and the grip is really good. I like the flow and the layout.”
Dwyer also finished first in the Expert Unlimited GP Shootout, first in the Expert Unlimited SuperSport, second in the Expert Heavyweight SuperSport and second in the Expert Unlimited Superbike.
Dwyer will compete next week in the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) Pro Racing Series.
The 15-year-old rider, Stefano Mesa won multiple races including the 125 Grand Prix by 8.733 seconds with an average speed of 88.848 mph riding a Prieto Performance Yamaha R6 SuperSport.
“The race was really hard, “stated Mesa. “I just had a mind to win. I really had a great battle with Santiago [Villa]. I passed him a couple of times and was able to win. I had a lot of fun. This is actually one of my favorite tracks. I just like to ride and have fun.”
The Boca Raton, Fla., resident also won the Expert Middleweight SuperSport, Expert Unlimited Superbike, Expert Middleweight Superbike events while finishing second in the Expert Middleweight Grand Prix and third in the Expert GTU race.
CCS will return to Palm Beach International Raceway on Oct. 2 through Oct. 3, 2010. |
